The requirement for high level of dependability is crucial in many important domains. In this paper we present the concept and implementation of Cobra - the Common Object Library for Building Reliable Application. This library consists of a set of protocols and algorithm objects that allow to structure fault tolerant distributed applications and simplify the composition of complex protocols in a flexible manner. Cobra library guaranties the proper behaviour of protocols even in the presence of network partitions. Moreover, it is implemented totally in Java, which allows benefiting form all Java characteristics. Furthermore, the Cobra library objects are accessible for wide range of applications, by making them available through CORBA.
