This article focuses on the introduction of the StarOffice 8 office suite software developed by Sun Microsystems Inc. The software is compatible with the Linux and Solaris operating systems, wherein it is based on an open source technology, and uses the OASIS OpenDocument file format. Company executive Edward Moffat claimed that the software has the ability to import most of Microsoft macros even though macros in the Microsoft environment are Visual Basic-based. Furthermore, the software can import password-protected Microsoft Office 2003 documents and a database wizard which make it easier to import MySQL or Oracle databases. Finally, the low cost of the commercial office suite is an additional benefit for large companies leveraging the legacy data created with Microsoft Office documents when migrating to StarOffice.
