The ballistocardiogram (BCG) signal is an important basis for noninvasively monitoring the cardiac health. In order to obtain accurate characteristics of cardiac pulse, it is necessary to separate respiratory signal and BCG signal from the observed physiological signals. The mattress based on a piezoelectric film sensor is developed for acquiring BCG signals and the BCG signal analysis system based on the variational mode decomposition (VMD) algorithm is proposed for separating the BCG signal and the respiratory signal. The parameters of VMD are set according to the statistical characteristics so that the BCG signal and the respiratory signal can be extracted accurately at low signal-to-noise ratio. The BCG signal analysis and extraction is an experimental project of the "Random signal processing" course. By using MATLAB tool, the extraction and analysis of the BCG signals can be realized, which can promote students to master the theory of random signal processing. It is also helpful to improve students' ability to solve complex engineering problems in practical random signal processing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
