The authors of this article propose environmental computing as a distinct branch of science. The article starts with examining the beginning of the intersection of environmental sciences and computational sciences with key concepts including environmetrics and data-driven models. Then the article explores the interconnected domains, the science of environment and the science of systems, that give rise to environmental computing. The methodologies of each of these domains are highlighted including hypothesis testing and simulation and prototyping.
