This article explores the current state of ransomware by exploring the tactics, techniques and procedures of recent ransomware campaigns with an emphasis on ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS). The article examines the overall ransomware ecosystem—including the RaaS model, services and infrastructure—as well as the five main stages of a ransomware attack. This overview is provided to encourage systematic analysis of ransomware taking technical, human, organizational and political angles all into consideration.
