Nearly three years ago, Microsoft Corp. first announced its project called .Net. The project presented a sweeping vision of a new, interconnected world where consumers and businesses could connect to the Internet anytime and anywhere. Web services, the technology underlying both .Net and Sun Microsystems Inc.'s Java technology, also promised businesses the ability to link software systems without human intervention, thereby reducing costs and boosting efficiency. Against all these, the dizzying potential of web services hasn't been fulfilled yet — but organizations are beginning to test and grasp the technology. The argument for web services hinges on seamless integration between systems but vendors are still in the process of hammering out common technologies such as XML.
