The article discusses the application of an approximate dynamic programming (ADP) based optimal control method to multistage optimization problems. A case study of an integrated plant with a reactor and a distillation column with recycle is presented to demonstrate the usage of the method. The ability for the method to reduce a multistage optimization problem needing to be solved online at every sample time to a single-stage optimization is noted, mentioning that the real-time computational load is greatly reduced as a result.
